Thousands of medical cannabis patients, growers, friends and family gathered over the weekend in Santa Rosa, CA. for the 10th annual Emerald Cup — the only outdoor organic marijuana competition in the world.
An outdoor grower of DNA Genetics’ Lemon Skunk from Monterey, CA. took first place, beating out about 130 entries from the Emerald Triangle and another 130 entries from around California. Second place went to Cherry Cola from Sonoma County Collective. Judges gave third place to Mendocino’s Mean Gene for his Cherry Limeade- a cross between Jigga’s Girl Scout Cookies and an old NorCal Black Lime.
“It’s off the charts,” said judge and Harborside Health Center manager Rick Pfrommer. “Simply phenomenal.”
First and second place in the hash category went to third-generation Mendocino growers and hash-makers Boo Boo Bubble for their OG and Girl Scout Cookies bubble hash. Boo Bo bubble bested 34 others, and their whole plant GSC hash tested at 67% THC.
More than five thousand people appeared to have attended the once-underground pot contest which has traditionally been held hundreds of miles further north in Humboldt County. Event organizer Tim Blake and Samantha Mikelojewski moved the event south to the Sonoma County Fairgrounds this year to better access Bay Area crowds, and provide better services for the growing cup.
“I got a lot of flack for doing that,” Blake told organizers. But the Emerald Triangle didn’t ditch him. Half of the entries still came from the Humboldt and Mendocino area.
Wearing slashed, threadbare denim, work boots, and paint-flecked hoodies, grizzled farmworkers from the remote mountains mingled with Bay Area city slickers in the smoky Prop 215 area. Dispensary operators and other canna-businesspeople ogled the 260 or contestants arrayed in a huge glass case.
Prop 215 icon Dennis Peron married his longtime partner John at the Cup, in a proceedingMC'd by legendary civil rights lawyer Tony Serra, who told cheering crowds their movement was ascendant.
“We changed the law. We changed the country & we ain’t done yet!”
Jefferson Starship closed out Sunday evening with numbers like “Somebody to Love”.
