With Justin Trudeau’s election came literal high hopes for our friends up north, as he promised to legalize marijuana in Canada. Yesterday, it was finally announced that Canada’s Health Minister will introduce a law next year to legalize marijuana use.
Jane Philpott, Canadian Health Minister, spoke to a special session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, yesterday of all days, and expressed that Canada’s new marijuana reform would not just be for medical, but also recreational use.
“We know it is impossible to arrest our way out of this problem,” Philpott said. Medical marijuana is already legal in Canada; however recreational marijuana will continue to remain illegal until the law goes into effect.
According to Reuters, “shares of medical marijuana producers rose after the announcement. Canopy Growth Co closed up 9 percent at C$2.79. OrganiGram Holdings rose nearly 16 percent to C$1.25 and Aphria Inc rose 8 percent to C$1.67.”
